Note from Mavis Williams (nee Trewartha)
Tony has been trawling Welsh Newspaper Archives for references to 'Trewarthas. He came upon the following report in the' Cardiff & Merthyr Guardian Newspaper' for Feb. 1870. REPORT OF AN EXPLOSION AT WILLIAMS' OLD PIT, ABERAMAN, WORKED BY MESSRS. ELLIOT & CO.

'The explosion was caused when 2 miners, John Trewartha and Charles Webb, wandered into old mine workings by mistake, with unguarded lights.
Fortunately this was not a major incident and the fire was quickly put out.
The two miners were lucky to escape with only superficial burns to hands and face.'

I imagine that this is why great great grandfather is referred to as a 'labourer' on the 1871 census. Presumably he could not have kept his job as a miner after such a breach of safety regs.

Williams' Old Pit at Aberaman, assumed to be where he worked.
