He served in the First World War against the Turks and Germans at the Battle of Beersheba in the 9th Light Horse Brigade, which was mounted infantry, who were a Bushman corps. Gassed and with a wound in the lung he returned to Australia and fathered 2 sons. He died 6 years later of war wounds.
(His death appears as 1928, but this is not consistent with the above story.)
