From "Life in Cornwall" ed. Rita M. Barton
FLOGGING AT BODMIN GAOL.
Joseph Trewartha, a miner, who was convicted at the recent Cornwall assizes for assaulting John Taylor, and stealing from his person a watch and guard, near Redruth, was sentenced to ten months' imprisonment and 25 lashes of the cat, and received on Monday the latter punishment, by order of the prison commissioners. He received the lashes in the corridor, within the hearing of the bulk of the prisoners, and his cries and groans might have been heard for a long distance. The punishment ought to serve as a terror to him and others for a long time to come. West Briton, 11 April 1878
